Established in 1961, the 230-acre Anne Arundel Community College Arnold campus includes eight academic buildings, a gymnasium, pool, student services center, student union, astronomy building, 440-seat performing arts center, library, two art galleries and 3,000-seat athletic field. Over the years, Anne Arundel Community College added additional facilities in strategic locations throughout the county including the Fort Meade Army Education Center, Glen Burnie Town Center and Arundel Mills. Classes are offered in myriad locations throughout the county.

Major Cleveland Smith was hired in November 2005 as the Deputy Director and the Accreditation Manager for the Anne Arundel Community College Department of Public Safety. The AACC Department of Public Safety was awarded Accredited Status with IACLEA in 2008. In 2012 the AACC Department of Public Safety was awarded Accredited Status through the CALEA Campus Security program.

On September 26, 2008 the Anne Arundel Community College Department of Public Safety was formally awarded accredited status making it the first 2 year college in the nation to earn this award by the International Association of Campus Law Enforcement Administrators.

Major Smith’s background includes 20 years of service with the Anne Arundel County Police Department. Major Smith has been certified as an Instructor by the Maryland Police Correctional Training Commission.

Major Smith has earned an Associates Degree in Police Science from the University of the District of Columbia; a Bachelors of Science Technology Degree in Criminal Justice from Bowie State University and a Masters of Science Degree in Applied Behavioral Science from Johns Hopkins University. Major Smith completed the Johns Hopkins Police Executive Leadership Program, Session II.
