Locking of classrooms doors on college campuses
?All:? I am looking for information/policies and past experiences regarding having classrooms locked at all times and professors/faculty/staff being assigned access to those classroom in the buildings they teach in during the campus open hours.? As our school has a majority of classrooms having the ability to lock via our card access system and plans to outfit all classroom doors in the near future;? I am proposing that we keep the classroom locked.? The main purpose is that anyone inside a classroom (we have strong and solid wood doors and most walls are concrete block along the hallways providing a pretty secure hard corner inside the classroom) does not have to take any steps to lock the door and can immediately seek shelter inside the room.? Our card access system is very programmable with the ability to allow access on any schedule to anyone assigned to a series of doors.?
? ?Counter arguments are for students to be able to go inside the classroom before the professor arrives.? As our campus and most campuses have plenty of student-friendly “free spaces” to sit and relax/work on computer/read/phone, etc.) most students will arrive right “at the bell” and arent’ congregating in the hallways.? ?I know that several colleges and schools have had to rapidly move to installing locks after an incident.
Any feedback or sample or actual policies you can share are truly appreciated through this thread or direct email.
