Disciplinary Process

Good morning, my name is Stu Hamblen, Director of Campus Safety at Trine University, located in Northeast Indiana. I have been here for 5 years. The university is small, with about 2,000 students on campus at any given time. I currently handle the judicial process myself. My officers file reports, and I review them, set up appointments, and issue sanctions. When this was assigned to me, I did not feel comfortable being the judge, jury, and executioner for the rules my team is enforcing. Being a retired police officer, it feels wrong. Does any other college have its Chief or Director doing this?

    Stu,

Tom DeSimone, Director of Campus Safety, Ocean County College, NJ. That’s a bad practice. Our parking violations are adjudicated by a staff committee not associated with Campus Safety. No members of the Department sit on the committee. All other disciplinary referrals are sent to Student Conduct for adjudication.

Thanks for that. My associate director does parking appeals. I am against it, but feel like my hands are tied.
